Students of Moscow Polytechnic University have successfully completed their participation in the 10th All-Russian Summer Universiade, held in Saransk. The university’s best result came fr om taekwondo athlete Maksim Afanasyev, who won a silver medal. Other members of the Moscow regional team also delivered strong performances: Mikhail Kurbatov finished just outside the medals in fourth place, while boxer Gleb Potsekula secured a fifth-place finish.
The anniversary edition of the Universiade brought together more than 3,500 of Russia’s top student athletes from 60 regions across the country. The World Taekwondo (WT) competition, wh ere Moscow Polytechnic students achieved their strongest results, began on July 17 in Saransk. Boxer Gleb Potsekula entered the competition earlier, on July 13.
The university’s athletes qualified for the national event thanks to their outstanding performances in previous competitions. For Maksim Afanasyev and Mikhail Kurbatov, qualification came after winning bronze medals at the Russian Student Taekwondo League Championship, earning them places on the regional team. Notably, this qualifying championship was hosted by Moscow Polytechnic University in May at the Polet Sports Complex. Gleb Potsekula, who already holds the title of Master of Sport of Russia, arrived at the Universiade as the Moscow Men’s Boxing Champion.
This year’s All-Russian Summer Universiade featured competitions in 16 sports, including badminton, basketball, boxing, volleyball, judo, athletics, swimming, sambo, World Taekwondo (WT), football, and chess. Saransk hosted competitions in 14 disciplines, while additional events took place in Salavat (Republic of Bashkortostan) and in the Sirius Federal Territory.
