Advice for First-Year Students from Moscow Polytech Psychologists: How to Adapt to University Life

Starting university, especially when it involves moving to another city, is often associated with stress and anxiety. Anastasia Puziy, a psychologist at Moscow Polytechnic University, explains how first-year students can adjust to unfamiliar surroundings. Drawing on her own experience, she offers several tips to help recent school graduates adapt to university life more easily.

"I have moved from one city to another twice myself, so I am very familiar with what you are about to experience. The adjustment period usually lasts fr om six months to a year, although it is different for everyone and depends on your individual pace and emotional state.

New living conditions will bring many different emotions and feelings. On the one hand, starting university is a joyful, exciting and interesting experience. On the other hand, you may feel anxious or upset as you adjust to unfamiliar surroundings. My advice is to seek support fr om the people around you and your loved ones, and to find things that can help you cope with adapting to a new place. Here are several suggestions.

First, if possible, prepare for your move in advance. Visit the place wh ere you will be living. Explore the area and study the map. Find out how public transport works, how to get to the university and the nearest clinic, and what shops are available nearby.

Second, pay particular attention to the place wh ere you will be living and create a space wh ere you feel safe and comfortable. Surround yourself with familiar things. It is important to have a place wh ere you can relax and relieve stress. You could bring a blanket, your favourite book or the cup you usually drink tea from at home. When you feel sad, you can wrap yourself in that familiar blanket. Create a cosy and safe corner that reminds you of home.

Third, make plans. Think about what you are still missing, whether there are any things you need to buy or documents you need to prepare. Make a list of what still needs to be done and focus on these practical matters.

Fourth, try to meet new people. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and tell others about yourself. Look for support among people who may become your friends. Stay in touch with your loved ones and call them regularly. Ask for support when you need someone to talk to. Don’t isolate yourself or try to deal with everything alone.

If you still feel that it is difficult to cope with these changes on your own, don’t hesitate to contact us, the psychologists at Moscow Polytech. You can find the support you need in our VKontakte community, ‘Psychological Support Service’.

Take care of yourself and remember to give yourself the support you need!”
