Moscow Polytechnic University Students Create AI Service for Adapting Complex Texts

Students at Moscow Polytechnic University have developed a chatbot, "Clear Translator," which adapts complex texts for people with cognitive and mental disabilities. Based on the YandexGPT 4K-32 neural network, the service simplifies vocabulary, shortens sentences, and brings the most important information to the beginning. Science Mail reports on the development on Autism Awareness Day.

The team tested five language models before settling on the current solution.

"People with mental and cognitive disabilities often face significant difficulties interacting with government and social services: instructional texts are overloaded with terminology and require a high level of abstract thinking," explains Vladimir Nikolsky, project leader and editor-in-chief of the journal "Higher Education in Russia."

The "Digital Solutions for Special People" project involves 50 students from various faculties, divided into groups based on the following areas: development, research, design, and documentation. The key partner is the organization "Our Sunny World," one of the first comprehensive rehabilitation centers for children and youth with special needs in Russia. The center's specialists provided materials for testing and are participating in the product evaluation.

In parallel with the bot, the team is developing a browser plugin that allows for the translation of selected text directly on the page without reloading. Plans include an iOS app, an eye-tracking system for studying visual perception in people with autism spectrum disorders, and full translation of entire web pages.

The project is being implemented as part of the federal program "Service-Learning."
