RSF supports two Moscow Polytech projects of developing new transport technologies
The Russian Science Foundation has announced the results of its competition for mission-oriented and applied scientific research projects within the framework of the national project for technological leadership, "Industrial Support for Transport Mobility." Two Moscow Polytechnic University projects will receive funding for their implementation.
Two winning projects from Moscow Polytech are:
“The Power Steering Systems for Trajectory Control, Highly Automated Vehicles, and Transport-Technological Complexes" led by Professor Andrey Keller, Dean of the Moscow Polytech’s Faculty of Transport. The project will be commissioned by the KAMAZ Innovation Center.
“The Development of a Formulation and Research of the Electrical Parameters of Soft Magnetic Stainless Steel" led by Professor Alexey Terenchenko, Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Power Plants for Transport and Small-Scale Power Generation. The client is the Fuel Supply Systems Design Bureau.
Andrey Keller told us more about the competition projects:
“The support of two of our applications is not only recognition of the high scientific and engineering potential of Moscow Polytech but also a very important contribution to the native transport industry.
This win is extremely significant for the Faculty of Transport. It clearly demonstrates that we actively and effectively participate in the implementation of the national technological leadership project "Industrial Support for Transport Mobility." We not only prepare high-qualified engineers, capable of completing the most ambitious tasks, but we also directly conduct practical researches and developments, creating technologies for the innovative transport of the future.
As part of the first project, we will create a range of advanced power steering systems for highly automated trucks. We will concentrate on creating electromechanical actuators and the implementation of the "steer-by-wire" control principle.
Which positive results for the industry in particular do we expect from this project?
— Safety improvement. Replacing traditional hydraulic systems with electromechanical drives will improve vehicle control and the reliability of the entire system. Furthermore, "drive-by-wire" systems enable the software implementation of complex stabilization and trajectory correction algorithms, which is critical for automated driving.
— Energy efficiency and environmental friendliness. Electromechanical power steering consumes energy only when operating, unlike constantly running hydraulic pumps. This reduces the load on the vehicle's electrical system and, consequently, fuel consumption, which is in line with global trends in reducing emissions.
— New automation opportunities. Steer-by-wire technology is the cornerstone of creating fully autonomous vehicles. It provides precise, fast, and flexible steering control based on commands from the control unit, paving the way for the creation of a new generation of intelligent transport and technology systems for our partners at the KAMAZ Innovation Center.
The second supported project, led by Professor Alexey Terenchenko, is dedicated to the development of new soft magnetic steels, and it is also of great importance for the creation of advanced fuel injection control systems for internal combustion engines.
I am confident that the combination of our scientific expertise and the needs of our industrial partners (KAMAZ PJSC and Fuel Supply Systems Design Bureau) will yield breakthrough results that will strengthen Russia's technological sovereignty and competitiveness in the global market."
