Moscow Polytechnic University develops modular robotics system to teach children smart transport control.

Moscow Polytechnic University is developing a hardware and software system based on interchangeable modules that will demonstrate to schoolchildren the operation of sensors, robotics, 3D printing, and elements of intelligent transport control in a playful way. The project's author, Anna Nikulina, a senior lecturer fr om the Department of Dynamics, Strength of Machines and Strength of Materials, received a V.E. Fortov grant for the development.

Career Guidance from an Early Age

Early career guidance in high technology is becoming especially important today, as interest in engineering fields begins to develop in school. However, many educational kits are either too complex for beginners or limited in functionality.

The new Moscow Polytechnic University complex, wh ere demonstration robot cars will move around an interactive play area, will help children safely and engagingly explore modern digital technologies.

The Project's Innovation

"The key idea of the project is modularity. The robotic platform will utilize interchangeable 3D-printed components: wheeled and tracked configurations, as well as a range of attachments, such as a manipulator, flashlight, and scoop. Modules can be swapped out during the demonstration, transforming the robot into different versions and clearly explaining the principles of rapid prototyping and engineering assembly," explains Anna Nikulina.

A key part of the complex is the play area: paths, obstacles, colored markers, and tasks. The robots will not only be user-controlled but also perform scenarios with elements of autonomy: following lines, recognizing markers, and avoiding obstacles using ultrasonic sensors. Participants will thus see how sensors "give the robot vision and hearing," and how algorithms help make decisions in real time.

A simple, engaging interface with gamification elements is provided for control on a tablet or smartphone: it will be easy for children to engage in the process, and for teachers to explain the "magic" behind movement, navigation, and reaction to objects.

Background: The V.E. Fortov grant competition is being held as part of the federal program "Priority 2030," in which Moscow Polytechnic University is participating with the strategic projects "Modular Platform for Compact Electric Vehicles" and "Localization of Automotive Components."
