Media Experts Conducted Demo Interviews on Journalism for Moscow Polytech Applicants
An unusual master class from famous journalists and media experts was held at Moscow Polytech for young people who want to enroll in journalism in 2025. Senior correspondent of Match TV Vadim Struminsky, CEO of Octagon Media, film producer Andrey Nikolaev and editor-in-chief of GlagoLPress (SMI2) Oleg Pavlov conducted a trial interview for applicants.
The motivation and readiness of applicants to become journalists was usually assessed at trial entrance exams by teachers of the Institute of Publishing and Journalism of Moscow Polytech. This time, current practitioners and experts in the media sphere joined the interview.
Vadim Struminsky noted that in journalism it is generally accepted that the best theory is practice.
“This is really so. However, I am confident: if you really want to go into the media - it doesn't matter, a newspaper, video production, radio, something related, you need to get a basic education, and preferably a specialized one. And not do it like I did, - the journalist addressed the interview participants. - It took me 8 years to get a diploma - first I tried to study at the economics department of a technical university, then I was expelled, served in the army, took the necessary exam, and only then studied to be a journalist."
Oleg Pavlov said that for him it is interesting to look at the guys who choose journalism today, and he wishes that they would come to the company as prepared for work as possible.
“We have the opportunity to communicate with the institute’s management and with teachers. They are very interested people, they ask who you would like to hire. There is such a formula: the young ones have energy, the elder ones have experience. This combination of energy and experience, as a rule, gives an excellent result. We expect the energy, but in such a way that an experienced person would not explain the obvious truths to newcomers to the profession, and would not waste time for retraining and unnecessary explanations.”
According to Natalia Prygina, Senior Teacher of the Department “Journalism and Mass Communications”, for people such a demo interview is an opportunity to assess their own strengths and, if necessary, “reformat”, as well as to receive important feedback:
