How first-year students adapt to student life: the advice from psychologists of Moscow Polytech

For many first-year students, entering a university, especially moving to another city, is relating to stress and anxiety. At the same time, not everyone is aware of what they should be specifically prepared for. A psychologist of Moscow Polytech Anastasia Puziy will told new students how to avoid confusion in the new environment. The specialist shared her personal experience and gave some advice how to promptly adapt oneself within the university.

“It turned out that I myself moved twice fr om one city to another. That is why this story that you will face now, is personally familiar to me. The very adaptation takes place over a certain period of time, in average from 6 months and up to one year. At the same time, everyone has their own way. In addition, this is normal: everyone has his own pace, own state. New living conditions will cause you a lot of emotions and feelings. On the one hand, this is a joyful event, interesting, exciting; on the other hand, you can worry and get upset at the same time, because, how it used to be does not exist anymore. My advice: in order to cope with this condition, it is necessary to look for support among the closest circle and loved ones, as well as do what will help you to cope with adaptation at a new place. There are several options.

Firstly, if possible, prepare for moving upfront: come to the location you will live. Explore the location, get familiar with the map. For example, learn how to use transport, how to get to the university, how to walk to the clinic and what stores are around.

Secondly, pay special attention to the place you will live, set up some safety. It is very important to come to the place wh ere you may relieve tension. For this, you may take from home a plaid or a cup, which you traditionally drink tea from. And when you are sad, you will be able to wrap yourself in this plaid. Create a cozy and safe corner, which will remind you of home.

Thirdly, start planning. Look, what is lacking, which things or documents. Compile a plan, what should be finalized. Switch onto these organizational issues.

Fourthly, try to get acquainted with new people. Do not hesitate to pose questions, tell about yourself. Seek for the support from those people who could become your friends. If you forget about your loved ones, call them by phone. Ask for help, if you need to talk to someone, do not stay alone, and do not hold yourself.

Still, if you feel that it is hard to cope with changes independently, do not hesitate to ask for help from us, psychologists of Moscow Polytech. All our contacts can be found In our group VKontakte ”Psychological Counselling Service”.

The most important thing is to take care of yourself, support yourself!”
