The Year 2019 – The International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements

The year 2019 is declared by the UN General Assembly as the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements. This large-scale event is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the Periodic law of chemical elements by the great Russian scientist Dmitry Mendeleev.

The Russian Academy of Sciences, the Mendeleev Russian Chemical Society, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, Russian and foreign scientists took the initiative to hold the international Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements.

Russia's initiative was supported by foreign countries, international scientific organizations, as well as more than 80 national academies of Sciences and Scientific societies. Among them are: International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP),  the European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences (EuCheMS), the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and others.

The international year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements will be held under the auspices of UNESCO in several countries. As part of this event, it is planned to hold a large number of events: scientific conferences, thematic exhibitions, competitions of young scientists, etc.

On December 29, 2018, Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev signed an order "To Held the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements in 2019" and headed the organizing Committee. The organizing Committee includes heads of Federal Executive bodies, departments and leading scientific organizations.

The Opening Ceremony of the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements took place on 29 January 2019 in France, at UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

In Russia, the opening ceremony was held on February 6, 2019 in Moscow, at the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It was timed to the Day of Russian Science and at the same time to Dmitry Mendeleev’s birthday. The event was attended by Professor Vladimir Sister, Head of the Department “Processes and Apparatus of Chemical Technology” of Moscow Polytechnic University.

The official operator of the opening ceremonies of the international year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements in Paris and Moscow is All-Russian Festival of Science NAUKA 0+. The main topic of the festival of science in 2019 will also be the periodic table.

The General Partner of the Project is the Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation.

Within the International Year, more than 500 popular science and educational events dedicated to the 150th Anniversary of the outstanding discovery of Dmitry Mendeleev are planned to be held in all regions of Russia. All of them are aimed at attracting the attention of schoolchildren, students and young people in general to science and its achievements.

The holding of the International year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements in 2019 is of particular importance for Russia. This event will contribute to the international recognition of the achievement of the great Russian scientist Dmitry Ivanovich Mendeleev, as well as strengthening the prestige and popularization of Russian Science.
