Priority 2030: New materials for electric vehicle bodies

Vitaliy Doroshenko was one of the first young scientists to receive the P.L. Kapitsa grant in 2022. In August 2025, Vitaly presented the final results of his three-year research project. The competition is part of the Priority 2030 strategic academic leadership program.

Researcher Vitaly Doroshenko and students from the Moscow Polytechnic University have developed innovative low-density aluminum alloys based on the Al-Mg-Ca system.

What's important for electric vehicles? Lighter body weight means longer range and energy savings. Thanks to their unique phase structure and optimal heat treatment, the new alloys demonstrate lightness, increased strength, corrosion resistance, and manufacturing ease.

What's been done?

— The composition of the Al alloy (with Mg, Ca, Mn, Zn, Cu, Si, and Fe additives) was optimized to improve strength properties and corrosion resistance;

— Effective heat treatment regimes with two-stage aging were selected to maximize strengthening and increase hardness;

— The effect of impurities on mechanical properties and structure was studied.

The technologies are adapted for mass production through casting and pressure treatment, making them attractive for industrial implementation.
