New Library invites Moscow Polytechnic University students to an event dedicated to Mother's Day
The next meeting of the New Library Strategic Project takes place on 27 November. The event is called “What You've Been Reading. A special edition for Mother's Day”. Participants will discuss three fiction works, each with a different angle on the topic of motherhood.
Traditionally, Mother's Day in Russia is celebrated on the last Sunday of November. In 2024, the holiday is on 24 November. Since 1998, the holiday has been celebrated annually throughout the country. On this Day it is customary to remember how significant the role of mothers in the family and society is. The New Library project offers students of Moscow Polytechnic University to dive into the world of literature representing mothers' images. Staff members is welcomed too.
- “Singing in the Blackthorn” is a family saga by Australian writer Colin McCullough, the novel was published in 1977. Using the example of the main character Fiona Clery the guests of the meeting will examine the image of an ideal mother ready to sacrifice everything for the happiness of her children.
- “Gone with the Wind” - a novel by American writer Margaret Mitchell, the events take place in the southern states of the United States in the 1860s. The novel was published in 1936. There is a different view of motherhood through the prism of the image of Scarlett O'Hara. Her children are not the priority for her.
- “Stepmother” - a book by Siberian writer Maria Khalfina. The story was published in the Ogonyok magazine in 1966. The book tells the story of a woman who accepted other people's children as her own, an example of how love can overcome any obstacles.
