“I Received Strong Fundamental Knowledge”: an International Student on Studying in Russia and His Internship in the UAE

Ali Mahmud, a second-year student majoring in Information Security, came fr om Syria to study at Moscow Polytech. He recently returned from an internship in Dubai and shared his experience of travelling to the Arab Emirates, studying in Russia, skills that help him in his studies and his plans for the future.
Tell us about the internship you completed.
- I was invited by a company called 7AWI MEDIA GROUP in Dubai to work as an assistant web developer. The internship took place from 13 January to 12 February, and as part of it I developed a website for them called Russia Moments. This is a news and articles publication site about Russians in the UAE and it is already operational.
How would you describe the internship? Did you receive any coaching and a mentor?
- The internship programme proceeded quite efficiently. I had a mentor, the company's engineering manager, who provided assistance with my tasks, offered guidance on enhancing the code and clarified the company's work processes.
How did you learn about the internship?
- I discovered it through acquaintances at the company. Prior to the programme, I studied WordPress software and PHP programming language to ensure I could effectively handle the tasks. During the internship, I not only applied my knowledge, but also learnt to work in a team, gaining valuable experience in this area.

What skills did you acquire during the internship?
- I gained valuable practical experience in web development through the internship. I learnt how to work with real projects, enhanced my knowledge of WordPress and PHP, mastered the processes of teamwork and understood the way the company operates. I also realised the importance of adapting to new tasks and requirements, which is crucial in the field of IT.
And what aspects of your studies proved beneficial for your career trajectory?
- From a university standpoint, courses like "Databases", "Basics of Web Technologies" and "Project Activities" were particularly advantageous, offering strong fundamental knowledge that I could apply during my internship.
What key insights did you gain from this internship?
- Participating in such a project was a valuable opportunity for me. I gained practical work experience in an international company, learnt about professional web development standards and created a full-fledged working software.
How did you become interested in Moscow Polytechnic University?
- I am a citizen of Syria and Russia. I was born in Syria and graduated from high school there. After that, I decided to continue my studies in Russia and applied to Moscow Polytechnic University after reviewing the ratings and opinions of Moscow's leading universities. The university attracted me with its high level of training and excellent opportunities for students and graduates.
Are you working on any projects at the university?
- Yes, I am actively involved in various initiatives at Moscow Polytechnic University. Currently, I am working in a team on the Sign Language Translator website that helps with sign language interpretation.
How do you like studying in Russia?
- I absolutely love studying in Russia at Moscow Polytechnic University. The professors are always ready to help and support me. The university offers good opportunities for further professional development, and while there are sometimes challenges, I still enjoy studying here and feel that I am getting a quality education.
What is your professional outlook for the future?
- I am planning a career in web development with a special focus on website security. This is an area of great importance and I am open to working in either Russia or the UAE, depending on the best job prospects. Both countries have exciting employment markets with plenty of opportunities for professionals in this sector.
What is your opinion of life in Russia? Do you have any favourite places in Moscow?
- I find living in Russia, especially in Moscow, very enjoyable. I am particularly fond of Moscow City, and I enjoy taking walks along Nikolskaya and Arbat streets, wh ere the atmosphere is always special.

What advice would you give to international students considering studying in Russia?
- I would advise them not to be afraid of new experiences, to be socially open, and to do their best to learn Russian, as it will help them a lot in their studies and life. It is also essential to research universities in advance to select a suitable option and be prepared to adapt to a new country. I would strongly recommend Moscow Polytech, as it is an excellent university offering high-quality education and numerous opportunities for students.
