Ekaterina Bogodukhova tells about science

The author of the project "Faces of Department" Inga Revazovna Borodkina interviewed a student of Department of Mechanical Engineering Ekaterina Bogodukhova.

Katya, good afternoon. Please, tell us a little about yourself, about your school period.

I am from a small town of Kumertau, Republic of Bashkortostan, with a population of 47 thousand people, where people are used to a measured and quiet life. It is quite difficult for young people to develop in such a city. I spent six years in choreography school and then I graduated from music school. It was there that I was taught to never give up and be steadfast in my purpose through thick and thin. I was a good student and graduated with a gold medal. Back in the ninth grade, I realized that it would be difficult to achieve such a future as I imagined in my city, which is why I decided to get an education in Moscow. As a result, I ended up studying at Moscow Poly.

Why did you choose Moscow Poly? How did you choose the field of study?

I have always been interested in astronomy, and Moscow Poly had Roscosmos as a partner. That's what attracted me! I remember that upon admission it was very difficult to navigate: what documents are needed, what passing points are required, and so on. But everything was laid out on the website of Moscow Poly. I easily found not only the information I needed, but also learned a lot of useful things for myself. At that time, physics was not so easy for me, and I was looking for a field where it was not necessary to take it. My choice fell on the field of "Innovation studies", where I am already in my fourth year, and even managed to work for six months in the field of astronautics, and my major was additive technologies.

How did your parents react to your choice and did they easily let you go so far to study? How was the adaptation in the metropolis?

My mother supported my choice, although it was difficult for her to let me go. But I have always strived for an independent life and sooner or later I would have left home. I was mentally preparing for life in the metropolis, and the adaptation was easy. In the dormitory where I moved in, I was greeted very warmly by both the commandant and senior students. Everyone used to help me at the beginning. By the way, I do not regret at all that I settled in the dormitory, and did not rent an apartment: it’s cheaper and life is a lot funnier.

How did your academic life at university begin?

My acquaintance with science began almost immediately. Already in my first year, I wrote an article, and then presented it in person at another university. Of course, the first time was quite exciting, I felt a certain responsibility, but we should always strive for something new — because only we can fill our lives with events that can change it by 180 degrees. I began to write more articles, and after the prizes began to appear, the excitement and the desire to be the first in everything began to appear. I advise everyone to write articles. Personally, this has taught me to correctly formulate my thoughts and correctly convey them to readers, as well as to fully immerse myself in the material with which I am working at the moment. Public speaking has also helped me become more confident and overcome my inner fears. I remember how at the first speeches in front of serious professors and candidates of science, my voice and hands were shaking. Now I look back with a smile on it, because it is these people who now treat me as a colleague in the scientific field. I don't know how many more articles I will write and how many times I will speak at conferences, but I know for sure that this experience will leave an imprint on my development as a person.

You graduate with a bachelor's degree with a decent baggage of scientific victories. What are the most important ones for you?

I have ten scientific publications in the RSCI technical journals, first and second places at various international scientific and research conferences. Another scientific publication in the Supreme Certifying Committee journal will be published soon. One of my most interesting works is the article "Designing an Advanced Model of Air Valve Diving Equipment for Extreme Diving", which has been recently published in the scientific and methodological journal "Extreme Human Activities".

Who helps you in your budding scientific career? Please, tell us about your department and your academic advisor.

Of course, all my success is not only my merit. I study at Department of "Materials Processing by pressure and additive technologies", head of department is Pavel Alexandrovich Petrov. At our department, you can approach any professor, and everyone will answer your question. Before, I couldn't even imagine that professors could be so responsive and always ready to help. But it turns out that the professors notice the potential in us, they know what direction it needs to be channeled into and are happy to help in everything. Head of department is my academic adviser. Pavel Alexandrovich supports and helps me in everything, for which I am very grateful to him. We have been working on the project "3D printing head for engineering materials" for two years now for project activities. I will defend my graduation work on the same topic.

Please, tell us about your hobbies.

I love to sing and dance, and when I entered the university I decided to try something new - I got into the cheerleading team, a rather difficult sport imbued with a team spirit. But it was not possible to combine active educational and extracurricular activities for a long time, because sooner or later any hobby develops into your main field of activity. I made a choice, and today science is my hobby.

Your wishes to the students and prospective university students.

Always strive for the unknown - come up with, develop and bring your ideas to life, because in the future it will bear such fruits that you will say to yourself: "Thank you!" Don't be afraid, try yourself in something new. As long as there is a desire, aspiration and interest - you will be able to combine everything. The main thing is to know when to stop and not to take on too much workload if you are not sure that you can handle it. Be sure - everything will come true, if you only want to.

Good luck and thank you very much for a very interesting interview!
