Cryomedicine, bio informatics and УgreenФ technologies: what do they teach you at the chembiotech faculty?

March 23 the Moscow Poly Acting Rector Vladimir Miklushevskiy met with the heads of the educational programs and of departments of the faculty of chemical technology and biotechnology. Dean of the faculty Sergey Belukov told him about the educational programs in cryomedicine, bio informatics and “green” technologies.

The science school of the faculty was created in the 30-s of the last century, in parallel with development of the chemical engineering in the USSR. For example, the first mechanical engineers of the Department “Mechanical equipment for turbo-oxygen installations” were trained by the Nobel Prize Laureate Peter Kapitsa. Among the graduates there were Hero of Russia, participant of the “Nuclear project” Leonid Kvasnikov and the Minister of Chemical Engineering of the USSR Leonid Kastandov.

The faculty still maintains relations with the chemical industry by training specialists in 9 directions – from refrigerating technique and the cryogen one to the life-supporting systems and biotechnology. The students pass the practical training, carry out research and project works at the partner organizations – SPO Geliymash, IONCh of RAS, ARI Kholodmash, R-Pharm, Ostrov, RBC, Bitzer. The faculty, jointly with the major industrial companies, holds a science-and-practice conference “Development of refrigerating industry at the present stage”, arranges “School of young researchers named after Professor I. M. Kalnin”.

Educational programs are held at the faculty in the framework of the program of the National Technology Initiative: currently the programs on cryomedicine (“HealthNET”), the Master program “Low-temperature systems for agroindustry” (“FoodNET”) are being prepared. For the second year running the faculty employees are arranging the profile “Engineering biological systems” for the NTI Olympiad.

The faculty of chemical technology and biotechnology conducts active research work – two dissertation councils work there in 3 specialties, at the Department “Thermodynamics and non-equilibrium transfer processes” a grant of the Russian Science Foundation is being implemented. The programs of academic exchange for the teachers, students and post-graduate students with the Beijing Chemistry and Technology University is on in the framework of a megaproject “One belt – one way”. In addition, there is a partnership with the Chinese companies – producers of equipment for plastics processing. Besides, the faculty cooperates with the companies and educational centers of Germany, Austria and Sweden “Krauss Maffei”, “Zapfir”, “Entex” in the area of training and retraining of personnel.

The students pass practice-oriented exams and are engaged in projects, solving the industrial companies’ cases. A specialized WorldSkills Center in the competence “Refrigerating equipment and air-conditioning systems” has been established on the basis of the faculty. The first qualifying championship was held at the Competences Center, and now laboratory classes in the profile disciplines are held here. The site is equipped with modern machinery by the company “Danfoss”.

In the framework of the project activity students work on creation of a thermo-vacuum chamber for testing spacecrafts, a freezer for cooking the ice-cream “Russian Ice-Cream”, a technological line for preparation of inulin, and other projects. In addition, the faculty has been developing the “green” directions, working on alternative energy sources, innovative nature-like technologies for the nitrogen industry, a project in water desalination by means of solar energy.

In 2017 the Departments of the faculty moved from the building in the Staraya Basmannaya Street to the premises in the Avtozavodskaya. The faculty managed to preserve completely the laboratory base: research labs constitute 40% of the square, occupied by the faculty. Most of equipment was replaced with the new one, supplied by partner companies and faculty graduates.
